Bavaria and California have extensive research and development efforts in place that are focusing on sustainable, efficient, and innovative biomass utilization for power, heat, bioproduct, and biofuel production.

In this Summer School, the state-of-the-art in the field of different biomass utilization pathways will be outlined and communicated among young researchers. The Summer School will take place over two sessions; one in California and another in Bavaria. Students are expected to attend both sessions.

The Biological and Agricultural Engineering (BAE) department at the University of California in Davis (UCD) will host the first part of the International Summer School.

Professors from UC Davis, UC San Diego, and other leading experts in the field of biomass utilization will give presentations and seminars.

On June 27th, participants of the Summer School are invited to join the Symposium on Biogas and Residue Utilization in California, organized by the German American Chambers of Commerce. The second part of the Summer School will take place in Bavaria later this year. Further information will be published soon!

Preliminary Program

The Summer School will cover theoretical seminars and lectures, experimental lab courses, and tours to several industrial biomass plants. The participants will be actively cooperating with each other and are invited to give presentations about their research projects.

Who can participate?

This International Summer School is designed for Master’s and PhD students from Bavaria and California.

However, interested students from anywhere are also encouraged to apply for participation, but not for travel grants.

Application

If you are currently enrolled in a university in Bavaria or California, you are invited to apply for a travel grant of up to $1000. Please use the official application template and send it together with a CV to: summerschool.les.mw@tum.de

You might also apply for additional funding by your university or exchange organizations like DAAD.

Deadline for the application: April 01, 2017

Notification date: April 14, 2017

Attendance Fee

The attendance fee for the Summer School is $200.

For students and PhD candidates from CA or Bavaria, this fee can be covered by BaCaTeC funding. Participants need to pay for their journey and housing ($80 - $100 per night). Snacks and drinks during the day and the tours are included. You will receive an invoice after registration.

For German students, funding options from your university or the DAAD might be available!
