Development of holistically optimised, sustainable and transferable energy concepts taking as example the Campus Garching of the TUM


The Campus Garching of the Technical University of Munich with more than 15.000 students and 3.500 employees is already ranked among the biggest university locations in Germany. If the rapid growth of previous years endures, there have to be a realignment of the energy supply.


Against this background a scientific team will develop an innovative energy concept by integrating the consisting and prospective building structure into a highly efficient supply structure and an energy production, that will be increasingly based on renewable energy sources. Therefore, the supply of electricity, heat and cold will be analysed jointly, not separately as usual. The necessary methods and tools will be developed interdisciplinary and can be applied by the optimisation of other complex areas of trade, commerce and services. The Bundesministerium für Wirtschaft und Energie funds this project.

The primary goals of the CleanTechCampus project are:

  • Further development of the interdisciplinary tools URBS and RIVUS to optimise jointly the power, heat and cold systems considering users, producers as well as storage facilities       
  • Valuation of innovative technologies in an interconnected energy system and subsequent implementation of the most interesting solutions in pilot projects     
  • Concept of a roadmap for a robust energy supply of the TUM Campus Garching


By implementing the proposed roadmap and especially the demo projects the TUM Campus Garching can be established in the long run as a living lab in the field of energy research. For this purpose, a close cooperation with industrial partners is aspired: challenges and opportunities for the integration of new technologies in the present energy supply system can be identified more easily and breakthroughs of pilot technologies occur earlier.


The Institute for Energy Systems (LES) accounts for the identification of innovative concepts to produce and store electricity as well as heat. After being identified, these technologies are characterised and evaluated in terms of ecological and economical aspects. This valuation is done by the application of URBS. The LES also responds the coordination of the project and the technical design of possible pilot projects, that emerge from this project.
